There is a 2000-word fixed word limit for the written element of the assessment.
A fixed word limit means that there will be a marking penalty for exceeding the number of words allowed in the written element. Please access the current policy for more information.
The poster element of assessment has a limit of one slide plus reference list. An additional slides will not be marked.
All Module Learning Outcomes must be passed in order to pass the assessment:
LO1: Systematically explore the issues underpinning health outcomes and inequalities between two disparate countries or population sub-groups.
LO2: Identify and define key drivers and challenges in global health.
LO3: Critically appraise the global policy responses to current and emerging transnational global health challenges.
LO4: Critically discuss health improvement models used by health systems to improve health outcomes.
LO5: Apply a critical understanding of the social determinants of health and health inequalities in a national and global context.
The first page must include the academic integrity declaration, which is included in the submission space.
Please use the following formatting:
- 1.5-line spacing.

Part One: Academic Poster relating to a global goal for health improvement initiative.
Design an academic poster that presents and critically examines a global health improvement initiative linked to a global health challenge or inequality.
This should summarise key information which you have included in your written discussion. It should be concise, referenced, and include tables and diagrams where relevant.
Use concise language and.
Your poster should include:
- Title – This should be concise and accurate.
- Global Health Issue – Briefly describe: the health issue, its global significance and why it is important for nursing practice
- Health Improvement Initiative – Outline the aims and objectives, target population, implementation context
- Health Inequalities – Explain who is disproportionately affected, patterns of inequality, disparities in health outcomes
- Social Determinants of Health – Identify key determinants influencing the issue, for example; income, education, housing, employment, environment, healthcare access
- Intersectionality – Consider how intersecting factors may influence health outcomes. For example; age, gender, ethnicity, disability, migration status, socioeconomic position
- Policy Context – Identify relevant global or national policy responses.
- Health Improvement Model – Apply an appropriate health improvement model or framework to your initiative, e.g. Ottawa Charter, Socioecological Model, Dahlgren and Whitehead Model, Behaviour Change Wheel
- Nursing Implications – Discuss implications for nursing practice, leadership, advocacy, health equity
- References – Include key references in Harvard Cite them Right style.
The initiative may be linked to areas such as:
- a sustainable Development Goal (SDG)
- a national or international health programme
- a public health intervention
- a global policy initiative
Examples include:
tobacco control initiatives vaccination programmes
maternal health interventions obesity prevention strategies
antimicrobial resistance initiatives climate and health intervention
diabetes prevention programmes mental health initiatives
You can choose to focus on a country, a population subgroup, or a specific health issue
PART 2 is on the next page.
Part 2: Critical Discussion (2000 words fixed word limit)
Critical discussion of your chosen initiative to include the underpinning issues and challenges, health improvement models, and comparison with a disparate country or population sub-group. This should expand on the content presented in your poster, and not simply replicate it.
Your discussion should critically analyse the chosen initiative and demonstrate application of global health concepts, theory, and evidence. It should expand on the content in your poster.
Introduction (approximately 200 words)
This should provide an overview af what will be included in the work. Include:
- the global health issue
- the chosen initiative
- the significance for nursing practice
- the structure of your discussion
Main Body (approximately 1600 words)
In this section you need to critically discuss all elements relating to your chosen global initiative. Remember that you need to include the underpinning issues, challenges, health improvement models and compare with a disparate country or population.
- Global Health Context and Underpinning Issues
the burden of disease
global patterns of inequality
key drivers and challenges
environmental, political, economic and social influences
justify why this is a global health issue
- Social Determinants of Health and Intersectionality
Critically analyse the ways in which social determinants influence health outcomes, for example:
structural inequalities
inequity versus inequality
intersectionality
vulnerable populations
how do the determinants interact to create unequal outcomes?
- Global Policy Responses
Critically appraise relevant policy responses, such as:
Sustainable Development Goals
WHO strategies
national policies or international frameworks
Evaluate:
their effectiveness
implementation challenges
equity implications
unintended consequences
- Health Improvement Models
Critically discuss the health improvement model(s) underpinning the initiative. Consider:
theoretical basis
strengths and limitations
appropriateness for the target population
ability to address inequalities
Justify why the chosen model is suitable
- Comparative Analysis
Compare your chosen country or population with a disparate country or population subgroup and analyse:
health outcomes
determinants of health
policy responses
healthcare access
cultural and contextual factors
critically discuss why differences exist
- Nursing Implications
Critically reflect upon the implications for:
nursing practice
leadership
advocacy
culturally responsive care
reducing health inequalities
Conclusion (approximately 200 words)
