Why are you doing this assessment?
The ability to work in a culturally safe way is a key competency in almost any career you could think of that graduates of our courses would work in. This is particularly true if you are interested in a career such as counseling, social work, psychology, or human services. We want you to understand this as a concept and understand how to apply it from the beginning so that you can use this as a lens as you engage more deeply with your studies. This assessment allows you to practice this at a beginning level and set a good foundation for the future.
What do you need to do?
So far in this unit your assessments have focused on your early experiences in higher education. Now, we would like you to think ahead to the future planned profession or career that you might like to pursue after completing your study. Once you have identified a profession/career category (e.g. Child Psychologist), identify a particular cultural group that might be a vulnerable population you will encounter (e.g. Australian and Torres Strait Islander children). The goal of Assessment 2 is to In develop a resource that would guide a new practitioner within this field on how to provide a culturally safe environment for that vulnerable group you have identified.

Your “cultural safety guide” for professionals should first clearly identify the relevant professional field and the chosen focus group. Then, the resources should address the below prompts:
1. Why is this cultural group important to consider in the profession/career you have selected?
2. What are three culturally unsafe practices that new professionals in this field should be aware of and actively avoid or remove from their role?
3. What is the one most significant culturally safe practice that new professionals in this field should be aware of or actively engage with in their role?

You can choose to provide the guide in any format (written, oral, or visual) which you think is suitable for the kind of new practitioner you are developing. Whichever way you do it, the resource should take about 20 minutes to read, watch or review. For purely written documents, this should be no more than 1200 words. For audiovisual presentations, no more than 15 slides and 20 minutes of total engagement time. The teaching team will provide specific examples of acceptable duration for other response formats throughout the term.
In answering the questions provided, you must identify at least eight credible sources of information that help provide evidence for the information you provide. For example, these sources must help explain why the chosen group is important to consider in the identified profession and provide evidence of culturally safe and unsafe practices. You should summarise the key points in these sources of information when answering the 3 key questions you are responding to. The resource should draw on at least 8 credible sources, with at least four of these being peer-reviewed articles. You may also draw on grey literature sources such as government reports, policy statements, or credible websites.
You will need to provide the references for the sources of information you have used for the task. While you are not being graded on the accuracy of referencing format, the references should be provided in such a way that the marker is able to confirm the credibility of the resource by searching for it. At a minimum, this should include the title, the author, the date of publication, and the place of publication (e.g. Journal name or website name).
The marking criteria are given below. Further information about this assessment, including guides on how to complete the task, examples of previous submissions, and information on how to access and use credible sources will be provided in the weekly online content and in weekly tutorials.
