CCMT20412 Environmental Monitoring and GIS Formative Assessment Brief 2025-26 | NTU
Academic Year | 2025/26 |
---|
CCMT20412 Aims:
The aim of this assessment is to assess the cartographical skills of the student and to create a study site map of Brackenhurst estate using Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Specific Tasks
Using GIS software produce a map containing all of the required cartographic elements as well as a 100 word description of this.
Using QGIS software to produce a map showing the location of the study area (Brackenhurst estate). This should contain all standard cartographical elements (e.g. scale, North arrow and legend when appropriate) and you should ensure that the map is set to an appropriate zoom level, the symbology is appropriate and text is legible. You should also include an inset overview map showing the location of the site in a wider spatial context.
All data for this task is provided on the NOW learning page.
The map should be presented as a figure, and should include a figure caption (figure number and heading).
In the text description you should refer to your figure at the appropriate point, and provide a brief overview of the study site.
This will help you to understand how to create maps for your summative assessment and how to integrate these into your summative assessment.

The assessment must be submitted electronically via the NOW Dropbox, on or before the submission deadline, as a single PDF document.
All electronic submissions will be run through Turnitin text-matching software to check originality.
Module Outcomes Addressed
- Assess the issues of different (GIS) data structures with regard to environmental monitoring.
- Handle and interpret data, analyse and evaluate the evidence.

Cartography and map production (70%) |
Map not creating in GIS software. No evidence of any attempt to use standard cartographic elements. |
GIS map shows no evidence of planning, structure or balance. Lack of appropriate cartographic standard elements. No inset location map provided or this was not created in GIS. Figure included but no caption provided. |
GIS map shows some attempt at planning creating an adequate balance but structure could be vastly improved for example balancing relative sizes of objects and standardising font types/size. A few of the fundamental cartographic elements are presented but a number of elements such as scale bar or legend are missing. No inset location map provided or this is incorrect. Figure included but no caption, or missing figure number or heading. |
GIS map shows good evidence of planning creating a reasonable level of balance. There may be issues with font type/size across the map or relative size of objects in map area. Some of the fundamental cartographic elements are presented but a few elements such as scale bar or legend are missing. Inset location map provided but this is missing a scale bar, label(s) and/or spatial context. Caption provided with figure number and heading, though |
GIS map shows very good evidence of planning, with a clear structure and overall balance. Most of the fundamental cartographic elements are presented but one element such as scale bar, legend or locational inset may be missing. Inset location map provided but this is missing on of the following: a scale bar, label(s) and/or spatial context. Caption includes figure number and clear heading with sufficient detail |
GIS map shows excellent attention to detail, producing a very well structured and balanced output. All the fundamental cartographic elements are well defined and presented. Inset overview map may be missing elements. Inset location map provided but could have minor improvements. Caption includes figure number and detailed heading that clearly explains the figure. |
Exceptional professional cartographic presentation of the GIS map. All the fundamental cartographic elements are presented and goes beyond expectations by presenting further elements that demonstrate outstanding level of thought. Insert map provided and no changes required. Overall publishable map. Caption includes figure number and highly informative heading with precise detail, enhancing interpretation of the figure. |

Map description (30%) |
No description of the site characteristic. There are significant errors in the use of vocabulary, in punctuation, spelling or grammar and very weak organisation. |
Limited or no description of the site characteristics and figure was not referred to in the main text. Communication shows limited clarity, with significant errors in the use of vocabulary, in punctuation, spelling or grammar. |
Little description of the site characteristics and figure may not be referred to in the map text. Communication is generally competent but with some weaknesses in organisation and errors in the use of general and specialised vocabulary and punctuation, spelling or grammar. |
Good description of the site characteristics and figure is referred to in the main text, but there may be issues with placement of this or format. May be some inaccuracies or inconsistencies in the use of general and specific vocabulary; there are some errors in spelling, punctuation and the use of grammar. |
Very good description of the site characteristics and figure is referred to at the appropriate point in the main text. Strong communication skills demonstrating the use of general and specific vocabulary and few punctuation or grammatical errors. |
